Gozan-no-Okuribi, more commonly known as Daimonji, is a famous festival in Kyoto. A big character shaped fire on a hill side highlighted in a dark is one of Kyoto’s icon. The hill, or the mountain as the locals call, is very close to where I used to live and very familiar to me.<\/p>\n
This year, there was an argument about Okuribi. An artist living in Kyushu suggested that they should use pine from tsunami stricken Rikuzentakata as firewood, with messages of requiem on it. Both Rikuzentakata city and the organizer of Okuribi liked the idea and agreed. Pine was collected and messages were written.<\/p>\n
Then, some people in Kyoto who heard the plan felt uneasy because they thought there might be some radioactivity from Fukushima Daiichi NPP on the wood and burning it might contaminate Kyoto. Some tens of messages of protest were sent to the organizer.
\nThe organizer and Kyoto city carried on a thorough inspection on the wood and detected no radioactivity. Still, they decided not to accept those wood. The wood was burnt at Rikuzentakata, as welcome fire, or Mukaebi (Okuribi means send off fire) on the next day. Soon after they announced the decision, they received much more messages of protest, this time against their decision. Regret or not, the wood was already burnt. They decided to collect another pine from Rikuzenntakata and burn them at Okuribi on August 16th. That was what happened until August 10th, 2011.<\/p>\n
Worrying about radioactivity at Rikuzentakata, which is 240km away from the NPP, is scientifically nonsense. Moreover, they carried on componential analysis and confirmed that there was no radioactivity on the wood. Denying to accept even though the safety is confirmed, can be read as a message saying, \u201cKyoto will never accept anything from contaminated Tohoku, regardless of scientific basis.\u201d
